SANTO DOMINGO, April 8, 2025 — A concert night that started with a whole vibe with music, dancing, and celebration turned into a catastrophic night.

At the well-known Jet Set nightclub, a popular merengue concert was happening, and everything was going fine until out of the blue, all of a sudden, the roof collapsed, killing at least 79 people, including music and sports icons, and injuring more than 160 people.

As of now, by the latest news, the confirmed death toll remains at 79. Rescues are still going on, the rescue workers clearing the debris at full swing to find if any victims are stuck inside still.

This roof collapse incident became one of the deadliest nightclub disasters that happened in the country’s history.

This tragic event has shocked the entire nation and the world, especially with the deaths of beloved public figures, including former MLB stars Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, and famous merengue singer Rubby Pérez.

Jet Set- a famous nightclub located in Santo Domingo. On April 8, 2025, merengue concert was planned, and many fans attended the concert that night.

The fans were enjoying a live concert, and witnesses say the crowd was energetic, the music was loud, and everyone was having a great time – until disaster struck.

At around 11:45 PM, a loud sound was heard, it was a sound of the roof cracking followed by a sudden collapse of the roof.

The roof collapsed completely within seconds. The roof with steel, cement, and lighting equipment came crashing down onto hundreds of people below.

Videos taken before the collapse show a full house of fans enjoying the performance. Moments later, screams and panic replaced music and laughter.

Victims Include Sports and Music Icons

The collapse claimed the lives of several well-known personalities.

Among them was Octavio Dotel, a retired MLB pitcher who played for 13 teams over a 15-year career — more than any other player in MLB history.

He was best known for winning the 2011 World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals and for representing the Dominican Republic in international baseball.

Also among the victims was Tony Blanco, another Dominican-born MLB player, and Rubby Pérez, a legendary merengue singer known for his powerful voice and decades-long career. Pérez was performing on stage when the roof gave way.

The loss of these cultural and sporting heroes has left fans around the world heartbroken.

Rescue Efforts and Emergency Response

After the disaster of the roof collapse at the nightclub, the rescue team rushed to the location within minutes. The rescue team, emergency services worked throughout the night. 

Many were trapped under the debris. The rescue team has to cut off the steel beams to reach the victims.
